Introduction to Gor

In the 1960s, author John Norman created an extensive and erotic fantasy world called Gor. Spanning over 30 books, the Gor series became a significant part of niche fantasy literature. However, in the 1980s, the books stopped being published due to controversy and pressure from feminist circles. Despite this, from 2001 to 2016, new Gor novels were released as e-books.

Gor is a highly chauvinistic world where men dominate. Some argue that the first novel was a response to the rise of radical feminism in the 1960s. The series presents a detailed culture, language, and philosophy with BDSM-related aspects, leading some people to associate Gor with the BDSM community. While some fans have adopted its customs and ideology, the books ultimately depict an extreme, chauvinistic BDSM fantasy or even a critique of liberal American culture. The relationships described in Gor closely resemble master/slave dynamics.

The Goreans: The Philosophy of Male Dominance

In Gor, the male is considered the ultimate dominant figure—physically stronger, more intelligent, and naturally suited for leadership. The Gorean man is depicted as superior to Earth’s average male, both physically and mentally. Males in Gor are portrayed as pack leaders with a noble purpose: to fight and rule.

The history of Gor describes an advanced alien race called the "Priest-Kings," who controlled the planet's population like puppet masters. They forbade technological advancements, forcing the inhabitants to focus on their physical abilities, holistic healing, and social structures. The masters in Gorean society strive for self-discipline and seek to dominate not only a slave’s body but also her mind and spirit. They use a strict reward-and-punishment system, controlling their slaves’ diets, thoughts, and behaviors—often through BDSM-related tools such as whips and floggers.

The master/slave dynamic in Gor is structured as a form of behavioral conditioning, where rewards reinforce obedience. This dynamic has attracted BDSM practitioners fascinated by the fantasy, but others see it as nothing more than an exaggerated chauvinistic ideology. Despite this, the Gor series has inspired a following of people—both men and women—who choose to live according to its principles.

The Three Types of Women in Gor

1. Free Women

These women, though not submissive, exist within the male-dominated world of Gor. The books do not elaborate much on them, but fan communities have speculated about their roles. Free women are independent within the confines of Gorean law, able to work and move freely, yet ultimately bound by rules set by male rulers.

2. Panther Girls

These are rebellious women who have chosen to reject the rigid norms of Gor. They escape or are exiled, living independently in the forests as hunters and warriors. They despise male dominance and often fight against the Gorean social order. Some Panther Girls even kill Gorean masters in their defiance of the system.

3. Kajira – The Slave Women of Gor

The kajira are pleasure slaves, consisting of:

  • Free women who committed crimes and were re-educated as punishment.

  • Panther Girls who were captured.

  • Women born and raised as slaves.

  • Women imported from other planets, including Earth.

Women brought from other worlds undergo a process of detachment from their previous lives, losing all rights and personal identity. Masters train them to accept their role emotionally and physically, using psychological conditioning to reshape them into obedient slaves. A kajira is considered property, meticulously trained to serve with total submission. She has no autonomy, no ownership of anything, and no desire beyond fulfilling her master’s needs.

Masters often own multiple slaves at varying levels of status and are responsible for their well-being, training, and discipline.

Male Slaves in Gor

While male slaves exist in Gor, they are usually war captives or physically inferior men who serve as laborers or in other submissive roles under the ruling Gorean males. They are not seen as equals to Gorean men but are instead used as tools or expendable resources.

A Notable Quote from the Gor Series

"Mastery is a matter of intelligence, trustworthiness, humanity, courage, and severity. Relying only on intelligence breeds rebellion. Using only humanity leads to weakness. Fixation on trust results in foolishness. Depending solely on courage results in violence. Excessive severity leads to cruelty. When a man possesses all five qualities, each in balance, then he can be a master."

The Influence of Gor in the Real World

Over the years, fans of Gor have attempted to integrate its philosophy into real life. This began in the realm of fantasy role-playing games but gradually extended to reality. In the 1990s, controversy arose in Kansas, USA, when a group of young fantasy enthusiasts formed a "Gorean harem" involving married and single women, engaging in Gor-inspired relationships.

In the 1970s, John Norman even published a guide called Imaginative Sex, outlining how to incorporate Gorean principles into role-playing and personal relationships. He stated that one of his goals as an author was to liberate readers sexually.

In later years, real-life Gorean cults were discovered and shut down. The most well-known cases occurred in Britain and the United States, and as recently as 2019, reports surfaced of a sex cult involving celebrities, with ties to Gorean ideology. These developments illustrate how Gorean philosophy remains subject to interpretation, attracting both devoted followers and strong critics.

Gorean Culture and BDSM

While Gor promotes a strict master/slave structure, its philosophy has found a place within certain BDSM and alternative lifestyle communities. Some individuals choose to adopt Gorean dynamics in consensual Total Power Exchange (TPE) relationships. However, many Gorean followers do not consider themselves part of the BDSM community, nor do they view their lifestyle as role-playing.

The Gorean ideal is absolute order: the man dominates, the woman serves, and there is no equality—only a structured, consensual hierarchy. Some practitioners even go as far as branding or tattooing their slaves as a mark of ownership, though this is controversial in mainstream BDSM circles.

Despite the voluntary nature of some Gorean relationships, legal and ethical questions arise. Several Gorean-inspired communities have been investigated and disbanded due to concerns over coercion and psychological manipulation. The distinction between consensual power exchange and exploitative servitude remains a subject of debate.

Conclusion: A Controversial Fantasy and Its Real-World Impact

While 24/7 BDSM dynamics exist in healthy and consensual relationships, the Gorean philosophy pushes these concepts to extreme levels. The Gor series has inspired devoted fans and equally strong opposition. Some view it as an oppressive and outdated ideology, while others see it as a legitimate alternative lifestyle choice.

Debates continue over whether individuals should be allowed to adopt Gorean philosophy if done consensually and with full awareness of the mental and physical implications. The discussion between societal norms, personal freedoms, and the ethics of extreme submission remains ongoing.

Today, a vast amount of information on Gor can be found online, from fan websites to investigative reports on Gorean-inspired cults. In darker corners of the internet, discussions persist among individuals dedicated to living according to Gorean principles, with some even traveling abroad to establish their version of a Gorean society.

Ultimately, the Gor series and its philosophy continue to provoke discussion, challenging notions of freedom, power, and human sexuality in both fantasy and reality.
